Sunlit Letterpress is owned and operated by Erin McCall, a graphic designer who fell in love with letterpress in her early 20s after reading an article about the dying art. Erin studied letterpress at the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design under Jim Rimmer - the renowned letterpress master, type designer, type founder, and illustrator.
Erin uses vintage printing presses from the late 1800s and early 1900s to craft each piece of stationery by hand.
When Erin is not operating the press (or cleaning ink of her fingers!) you will find her working in her graphic design studio -
Sunlit Media Graphic Design.
What is letterpress?
According to Crane and Company, Letterpress printing began in the 14th century as an alternative to laborious calligraphy. Invented by Johann Gutenberg, this form of relief printing was the first method for mass-producing the printed word. In the 1900s, offset and digital printing replaced letterpress as the preferred printing method.
At Sunlit Letterpress, we keep the craft of letterpress printing alive, offering printing that leaves a tactile impression and handmade quality that cannot be reproduced by offset, digital, or desktop printing methods.
